Drive-thru Mailboxes Removed
Since the La Mirada Post Office opened in 1970, it has had drive-thru mailboxes. Recently, these were removed due to ongoing theft and vandalism.
The removal of drive-thru mailboxes has raised concerns among some La Mirada residents, as it may impact those with health issues or mobility limitations who rely on the service to avoid leaving their vehicles.
Meals on Wheels Milestone
Last month, Meals on Wheels La Mirada celebrated its 50th Anniversary of serving La Mirada residents and were recognized at a City Council meeting.
In 1975, a small group of concerned citizens representing church groups, civic groups, and community interests saw that there were elderly, disabled, and ill residents in La Mirada who did not have access to nutritious food.
In April of that year, the first meals prepared by the La Mirada Community Hospital were delivered to the first five clients. The first office was located at the Kling Center in La Mirada.
These meal deliveries have been carried out by thousands of volunteers over the past 50 years with more than 6,200 meals being delivered so far, this fiscal year. Since its inception, Meals on Wheels on La Mirada has served more than 840,000 meals to at least 6,000 residents.
Currently, approximately 46 dedicated volunteers provide more than 180 hours per month to ensure homebound residents receive proper nutrition, personal contact, welfare checks, and “Service with Friendship.”
Today, meals are prepared by Lascari’s Restaurant and the Meals on Wheels office is located at the La Mirada Activity Center and includes three part-time staff members.
