LA MIRADA, CA — For more than 25 years, the Animal Clinic of La Mirada has been more than a place to take a sick pet.

For thousands of local families, it has been a familiar, trusted part of the community. The kind of neighborhood veterinary clinic where generations of pets have received care and where longtime clients know the faces behind the counter.

Now, the beloved La Mirada clinic is entering a new chapter.

The Animal Clinic of La Mirada is not closing, but the practice has been purchased and is transitioning to new ownership.

For a clinic with such deep roots in the community, the change has understandably raised questions among longtime clients about what the future may look like.

More Than 25 Years in the Community

Over the course of its history, the Animal Clinic of La Mirada has served more than 10,000 families and their pets.

Part of what has made the clinic so beloved is its distinctly neighborhood feel. Rather than feeling like a large, corporate veterinary hospital, the clinic has long maintained the atmosphere of a mom-and-pop practice — familiar, approachable, and personal.

It has also developed a reputation among longtime clients for keeping veterinary care affordable, an increasingly important consideration for families trying to provide quality care for their pets without facing overwhelming costs.

At the center of that history are the people who have spent decades caring for La Mirada’s animals.

Dr. Melvin Valera, the clinic’s manager, began working there in 1997. Dr. Lopez joined the practice just two years later, building relationships with local pet owners that have lasted for decades.

This week marks the end of that era. The clinic’s longtime doctors are retiring, making this their final week at the practice as the transition to new ownership gets underway.

Those relationships are difficult to quantify.

My own family is one of them.

For more than 15 years, my family has trusted the Animal Clinic of La Mirada with our pets. Even during the years I lived in Long Beach, I would make the 45-minute drive each way to bring my dog back to the clinic rather than take them somewhere closer to home. Like many families in La Mirada, our connection to the clinic goes beyond simply making an appointment when something is wrong. There is comfort in bringing an animal you love somewhere familiar to people you recognize and trust.

That is part of what has made this clinic special.

A New Owner and Questions About What Comes Next

The identity of the incoming doctor and new owner has not yet been publicly confirmed.

The transition is already underway as the longtime doctors prepare to retire at the end of this week. But for longtime clients, a change in ownership, coupled with the departure of the doctors they have trusted for years, naturally brings questions.

Among the concerns expressed by community members are whether the clinic’s traditionally affordable prices for visits and medications will remain and whether the warm, personal environment that has defined the practice will continue under new ownership.

Those concerns do not necessarily mean changes are coming. With details about the incoming ownership still limited, it remains too early to know exactly what the transition will mean for patients and their families.

And perhaps that is what makes this moment significant.

People aren’t concerned because the Animal Clinic of La Mirada is leaving its community.

They’re concerned because it has meant so much to it.

Preserving a La Mirada Institution

Businesses come and go, but certain places become woven into the fabric of a community.

For many La Mirada residents, the Animal Clinic of La Mirada is one of those places.

It is where families have brought new puppies and kittens for their first appointments. It is where longtime pets have been cared for as they grew older. And during some of the hardest moments of pet ownership, it has been where families have gone looking for compassion, guidance, and care.

Twenty-five years of that kind of trust cannot be built overnight.

As the Animal Clinic of La Mirada moves into its next chapter, the hope among its longtime clients is simple: that whatever changes come with new ownership, the affordability, familiarity and personal care that made the clinic a La Mirada institution will remain.
