How one lost dog inspired a community mission that has helped reunite hundreds of pets with the families who love them.

Every city has stories that define who they are. For the La Mirada Blog, one of those stories began on July 3, 2011.

That day, a stray dog was brought to the home of La Mirada Blog founder Tony Aiello. She had no collar, no identification, and no way of telling anyone where she belonged. Hoping to find her owner, the La Mirada Blog shared her story on Facebook and affectionately gave her the temporary nickname “Bloggie.“

Days passed, but her original family was never found.

Instead, something equally special happened.

A caring La Mirada family opened their hearts, welcomed her into their home, and gave her a new name: Hope. At the time, no one realized that Hope’s story would become the beginning of something much bigger.

When the La Mirada Blog launched on Facebook in 2009—the first organization on the platform with “La Mirada” in its name—social media was still finding its place in everyday life. It was a way to connect with friends, share photos, and keep up with local happenings. Few people imagined it could become one of the most effective tools for helping lost pets.

Hope changed that.

Her story showed Tony that social media could do far more than share local news. It could rally an entire community around a common purpose. What began with one dog soon became one of the La Mirada Blog’s longest-running community missions.

Over the years, the Blog has helped reunite hundreds of lost dogs with the families who love them. Every reunion tells a different story—a frightened pet wandering the streets, a worried family searching through the night, and neighbors coming together to help bring them home.

Some reunions happen within hours. Others take days.

Some end with joyful tears as families are reunited with beloved companions they feared they might never see again.

Those moments never get old.

Tony’s passion for helping animals began long before the La Mirada Blog. When he was growing up, his mother taught him that every animal deserved compassion and care. Those lessons stayed with him throughout his life and naturally became part of the Blog’s mission to serve the community.

There were years when lost dog posts seemed almost constant. Day after day, the community shared photos, recognized familiar streets, and kept watch for frightened animals. Together, neighbors built something remarkable – a citywide network of people willing to stop what they were doing to help a stranger.

Every Fourth of July, that spirit is especially evident. Fireworks send frightened pets running from their homes, and once again, the La Mirada community responds. Residents share posts, check their neighborhoods, and help families search for the companions they love.

Today, there are countless websites, apps, and online tools dedicated to finding lost pets. But long before many of those existed, La Mirada residents already knew where to turn.

The La Mirada Blog became more than a source for local news. It became a place where hope was shared. Fifteen years after Hope’s story began, that mission continues. Hundreds of dogs have found their way home because neighbors cared enough to stop, share a post, make a phone call, or take a second look.

That’s the real story. It was never about one Facebook page. It was never about one person. It has always been about a community choosing to look after one another. Because local news isn’t only about reporting what happened.

Sometimes, it’s about bringing a family back together.
