As the sun dipped low on October 30, dozens—including City Council members, staff, and local residents—assembled for La Mirada’s dedication ceremony, heralding the grand reopening of the revitalized City Hall Fountain Plaza, a cherished landmark reborn for generations to come.

Constructed in 1970 beside City Hall, the fountain encountered major setbacks in 2017, leading to its shutdown over safety risks, leaks, and obsolete wiring. City Council greenlit an eco-conscious redesign, removing worn-out planter boxes, aging equipment, and damaged concrete sections. New installations include advanced pumps, filtration units, and illumination systems.
The project preserves the beloved cascading waterfall while adding fresh features and green upgrades. Standout elements feature a compact upper basin with a modest jet and paved overlook facing the street, the southern basin reborn as a lush garden strip beside Civic Center Drive, plus vibrant LED arrays and pulsing water plumes in each basin. An innovative recirculation setup slashes consumption versus the prior layout, tackling sustainability worries. Fresh glass railings, improved watering networks, and vibrant plantings keep this gathering spot lively and welcoming.
Mayor Ed Eng joked with the crowd saying the new fountain is better than the Bellagio.

Shrinking water surfaces by almost 60 percent freed space for a broader deck with shaded seating, additional greenery, and panoramic sights of the cascade, boulevard, and Biola University’s sports fields—ideal for public events.
“This renewed area revives a treasured icon,” noted Senior Administrative Analyst Tony Moreno, project leader. “It enhances our Civic Center and promises delight for years ahead.”
Open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., the plaza will don seasonal lights by late November for extra holiday cheer. Come visit and enjoy the city’s vibrant core!
