HAM Watch Volunteers Bolster Disaster Preparedness During Great California ShakeOut
On October 16, the La Mirada HAM Watch team conducted a successful test of their radio equipment as part of the Great California ShakeOut, reinforcing the city’s commitment to disaster readiness. The dedicated group of licensed amateur radio operators practiced post-earthquake reporting, evaluated backup power systems, and confirmed local radio coverage to ensure reliable communication in emergency scenarios.
The La Mirada HAM Watch plays a vital role in the city’s Public Safety team, providing critical communication support during disasters and community events. These volunteers, part of a network of approximately 675,000 amateur radio operators in the U.S. and 2.5 million worldwide, use a wide range of wireless transmission methods to maintain connectivity when traditional systems fail. During the annual Citywide Disaster Drill, HAM Watch members facilitate essential communications between the City, emergency responders, and the County Office of Emergency Management.
In addition to disaster response, the HAM Radio Program supports law enforcement efforts and public safety initiatives, leveraging the volunteers’ skills and equipment to enhance community resilience.
The City of La Mirada extends its gratitude to these committed volunteers for their invaluable contributions. Residents interested in joining the HAM Watch or learning more about becoming an amateur radio operator can contact the City’s Public Safety Team at (562) 902-2960.
