La Mirada residents gather in the area of Tricia Lane and Hayford Street in 1959 to celebrate the 4th of July.

Before the large annual fireworks event officially began at La Mirada Regional Park, there were many other hyperlocal Independence Day celebrations in the La Mirada area, like the Green Hills Parade of today.

In the early 20th century, ranch hands at founder Andrew McNally’s Windermere Ranch recall munching on ice-cold watermelon on July 4.

The photo above is from 1959 near Tricia Lane and Hayford Street where La Mirada’s first present-day homes were built and this is thought to be one of the first modern era neighborhood celebrations in La Mirada.
