Northgate González Market returned to its roots this week with the opening of a new store in La Mirada, a city deeply woven into the founding family’s personal history.

On Wednesday, Jan. 14, the Mexican-themed grocer officially opened its newest location at 12721 Valley View Blvd., expanding its presence in Southern California while coming full circle to the community the González family first called home after arriving in the United States. For company leaders, the opening was as emotional as it was celebratory.

“For our family, La Mirada will always hold a special place in our hearts,” said Northgate Market Co-President Oscar González. “It was our first home, and opening a store here is a proud moment for our family.”

That journey is reflected throughout the new store, most notably in a custom mural titled “From Our Roots to Home,” painted by local La Mirada artist Alysia Ponce. The mural traces the González family’s story from Jalostotitlán, Jalisco—rooted in faith, hard work and tradition—to their reunion and new beginnings in La Mirada. The artwork captures a full-circle moment, honoring the path that led the family from their origins in Mexico to the community they now serve.

The grand opening was marked by a special reception attended by local dignitaries, during which Northgate González Market announced a donation of more than $20,000 to La Mirada-area schools. Beneficiaries include Los Altos Elementary, Foster Road Elementary, Gardenhill Elementary, Hutchinson Middle School, La Mirada High School, and St. Paul of the Cross School.

“La Mirada is proud to welcome Northgate Market and the González family’s investment into our city—the very community where they started many years ago,” said Council Member John Lewis of District 1. “Northgate Market is not only a great place to shop, but also a community partner. This new store represents a historic win-win for everyone in the City of La Mirada. Welcome home.”

The 29,800-square-foot supermarket brings 244 new jobs to the city and offers a modern shopping experience centered on fresh, authentic Mexican food. Shoppers will find many of the offerings that have made Northgate González Market a household name, including Tortillería La González, where masa is stone-ground throughout the day using corn sourced from Mexico, and Pastelería La González, featuring freshly baked pan dulce, bolillos and the chain’s signature tres leches cake.

The store’s carnicería continues Northgate’s long-standing reputation as “Los Meros Meros de la Carne Asada,” with expert butchers preparing high-quality cuts, while Carnitas Don Miguel serves a family recipe inspired by traditional Michoacán-style carnitas, slow-roasted in cazos for rich flavor and tenderness. Customers can also explore one of the market’s largest selections of fresh and dried chiles and spices, along with a Cocina offering ready-to-eat dishes such as empanadas, chile rellenos, guisados, rice and beans.

Founded in 1980, Northgate González Market has grown into a premier Southern California grocery chain serving Latino communities across Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Diego counties. Though the company now operates 44 stores, the La Mirada opening stands out—not just as another milestone in its expansion, but as a heartfelt return to where the González family’s American story began.
