La Mirada Rotary Club Hosts Annual Holiday Shopping Spree for Kids

La Mirada~The spirit of giving was in the air as the La Mirada Rotary Club hosted their annual Holiday Shopping Spree recently at Marshall's in La Mirada.

For over 20 years, the service club has sponsored the event, assisting less fortunate La Mirada families at Christmastime by providing a few clothing essentials.

Rotary secretary Eileen Wade explained to us that all nine La Mirada public elementary and/or middle schools are represented. The club, in coordination with the schools, chooses the children to participate by utilizing teacher suggestions from the various schools, with the club ultimately picking about five from each school. This year 43 children attended the event.

The kids are chaperoned individually around the store to purchase items they need, with one exception-no toys. Chaperones consist of Rotary and other community members including local police, fire and city officials, to which Wade called our "friends and helpers." They are each allowed to spend up to $75.00.

A huge crowd gathered in front of the store around 8 a.m. as it opened an hour early to accommodate the shoppers.

Something For Everyone at Tom’s in La Mirada

RESTAURANT REVIEW

La Mirada~John Politis and Jimmy Spathos have joined together as business partners to open up a new drive thru eatery in La Mirada.

Tom's Jr. Restaurant offers a large variety of choices on their menu from hamburgers to burritos- this place has it all! They opened on October 1st, and it seems as though their drive thru line has been busy ever since. The most ordered selections on the menu are the pastrami and steak sandwiches, and of course the charbroiled selection of hamburgers. The drive thru is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner so you'll be sure to find something your taste buds enjoy.

The breakfast selection offers everything from omelet's to burritos and even has one of the best breakfast deals in town- a breakfast sandwich for only $2.49. It's an easy place to stop without breaking the bank. The lunch hour selections range all the way from hamburgers to a variety of Mexican food dishes. The Avocado Bacon Cheeseburger is full of flavor with fresh avocado and bacon cooked to perfection-it's a must try! If you are looking for a healthy alternative, try the Grilled Chicken Sandwich or even one of their salads.

Co-owner, John Politis really believes in working hard, making his customers happy, and building relationships with the local community. He said, "You choose what you want to be-creating success by working hard". And both of these owners are working hard at creating the best menu selections possible for their customers.

Please be sure to welcome our new La Mirada neighborhood restaurant- they are open seven days a week from 6:30am to 11pm and are located at 15322 Santa Gertrudes Avenue in La Mirada near the corner of La Mirada Boulevard.

La Mirada Ebell Planning for 2012

La Mirada~"Food, Fun and Fellowship" will be the theme when La Mirada Ebell Club members meet 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14 at De Luca's Restaurant in Whittier.

Members traditionally use this session to review previous fundraising efforts, then regroup in January to finalize plans for the rest of the 2011-2012 club year.

A recent visit to Pechanga Resort and Casino was so successful the Club is considering a 2nd such bus trip after the New Year.

"La Mirada Ebell scholarships help high school graduates further their education", said President Cheri Collin, noting that last year's efforts allowed the club to present four $1,000.00 scholarships.

Future events include helping the Kiwanis Club at Sears this month as local youngsters complete their holiday shopping. Members also will provide and sell desserts at the Kiwanis-sponsored Spaghetti Dinner for Meals On Wheels, and host a Fashion Show April 14 at the La Mirada Country Club.

Women interested in community service are invited to join La Mirada Ebell at any time. Call Lorrie Larson, (714) 521-2561, for further information.

Standoff Ends at La Mirada Home With Fatality

We have been providing continuous updates, with La Mirada residents reporting, via our Twitter feed: www.twitter.com/lamiradablog

We have exclusive video featuring Police Captain Pat Maxwell press statement here: tinyurl.com7z7veu5

La Mirada~A barricade that started in the early morning hours, in a La Mirada neighborhood ended about twelve hours later, resulting in a ex-felon dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

At about 7:30 a.m. deputies responded to reports of shots fired at the home on Algeciras Avenue, adjacent to Rosecrans Avenue.  Family members from inside the home told officials that a man inside the home may want to harm himself. A  woman claiming to be the man's girlfriend said he shot himself in the foot, and blood was observed at the scene by a sheriff's helicopter overhead.

After orders to surrender by the SWAT team were ignored,  the man fired several rounds out of the house, around 11 a.m. No one was struck.
