In-N-Out co-founder makes largest donation in history of Biola University

Unspecified amount from the burger giant will help fund a $92 million 52,100-square-foot film school studio facility

La Mirada~Biola University will name its top-ranked film school the Snyder School of Cinema & Media Arts in tribute to Esther L. Snyder, co-founder of In-N-Out Burger after the unanimous decision by the Biola Board of Trustees was made to honor the Snyder family for a significant financial gift committed to the school as well as their legacy of godly virtues.

"Our family values the distinctly Christian education Biola University offers and are honored to play a part in continuing to offer students opportunities to make really impactful film pieces that change people's lives," said Lynsi Snyder-Ellingson, granddaughter of Esther L. Snyder and current owner and president of In-N-Out Burger. "God is a huge part of the In-N-Out story, and I have no doubt my grandmother would be grateful to know her name is associated with a school recognized for excellence in craft and character." (more)

La Mirada’s De Leo winner of AHL Man of the Year award

The San Diego Gulls of the American Hockey League recently announced that Chase De Leo has been named the team’s winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the San Diego community during the 2022-23 season.

De Leo, 27, volunteered and participated in a plethora of charitable endeavors this season, including the team’s Rady Children’s Rink visit – an event raising funds for the local Rady Children’s Hospital to help improve the health of young patients. San Diego’s captain also volunteered his time to participate in grassroots efforts to promote health, wellness and the sport of hockey in the San Diego community, joining the Jr. Gulls 10-and-under and 12-and-under teams for a practice at THE RINKS – POWAY Ice. REVIEW: Largest La Mirada Theatre ensemble ever for “The King and I”

This month, the La Mirada Theater of Performing Arts brings takes you back in time to the 1860’s and to the eastern Kingdom of Siam (now Thailand). At the time, the United States was in the midst of a civil war. Meanwhile, King Mongkut of Siam was working to modernize his country.

This brings us to the beginning of the story of Anna Leonownens and the King of Siam, brought to you through “The King and I”, a musical by Rogers and Hammerstein. The show features the theater’s largest cast ever, with a whopping 44 actors taking the stage to tell the story of a culture clash between East and West. (more)

Poster contest winners recognized and other news

Poster contest winners recognized at city hall

Winners of the City of La Mirada’s annual “Love a Tree” Poster Contest were recently announced and the winners were recognized at last night's city council meeting. 

Posters were judged for creativity and originality by the La Mirada Senior Council and the Community Services Commission. More than 500 elementary through high school students from La Mirada submitted posters recognizing the importance of planting trees in the community. (more)

Yoshiharu launches new restaurant concept in La Mirada

Eatery will offer new later-night dining and expanded menu

US-based restaurant operator Yoshiharu Global is set to launch its new concept called Yoshiharu Ramen & Izakaya, at its current La Mirada location.

The operator, known for Japanese ramen, made a soft launch of the new concept on April 7th and will make a grand opening this Friday April 14th.

Tucked away in the Stater Bros. shopping center at 12806 La Mirada Boulevard, Yoshiharu Ramen & Izakaya will offer a wide array of menu options to its guests including their signature ramen dishes, as well as a brand-new selection of Izakaya dishes. (more)

Sánchez delivers $2.2 million to Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District

Last Tuesday, Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (D-CA) delivered a check in the amount of $2,200,000 to the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District (NLMUSD), funding she secured as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023.

The funding Congresswoman Sánchez secured will be used to help NLMUSD build a virtual learning environment, providing students in the Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways, Dual Enrollment, and other programs with access to remote educational materials on demand. (more)

La Mirada High School held the official groundbreaking for its baseball & softball fields recently, officially opening the construction of the long-awaited project.
