California’s Most Dangerous Railroad Crossing Will Be Fixed
Metro will hold two community meetings on the grade separation project On September 30th from 3-5 p.m. and 5:30-7:30 p.m. at LM Resource Center
Santa Fe Springs~A Grade Separation Project is being considered at the railroad crossing at the intersection of Rosecrans and Marquardt Avenues in the city of Santa Fe Springs, just beyond the La Mirada western border.
Los Angeles County Metro is partnering with the BNSF Railway along with the City of Santa Fe Springs and Caltrans. The project is fully funded by the State's Section 190 Program, Proposition 1A, Measure R and BNSF.
The crossing has been rated by the California Public Utilities Commission as the most hazardous grade crossing in California, thus it is ranked first on the priority list for crossings eligible for funding. The project is expected to cost $130 million.
Once constructed, motorists will be able to travel safely through the intersection without the possibility of train to vehicle collisions. It will also improve the efficiency of train movement and eliminate the need for required train horns at the intersection. Metro officials say approximately 130 trains and 45,000 vehicles use this crossing daily.
There have been numerous accidents at the intersection over the years the last being on January 7, 2013 when 26-year-old Emily Scott of La Mirada was killed when her automobile collided with a freight train. There have also been suicides and attempted suicides at or near the intersection.
In June of this year Caltrans released its Benefit-Cost Analysis of the project. The report stated four fatalities, six injuries, and five property damage only incidents have occurred over a 10-year period that involve this at-grade intersection.
On October 30 2012 two LA County Sheriff's deputies pushed a disabled vehicle off the tracks preventing a mass transit disaster. We reported here in 2009 of a train vs. car incident.

An Opportunity for Residents to Help Keep La Mirada Safe
La Mirada~Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Captain Curtis Jensen is inviting residents, business leaders, faith communities and service group members to join a crime prevention initiative to reduce property crimes in La Mirada. Hear from your community leaders on how crime affects everyone and what you can do to get involved!
A meeting will be held on Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the La Mirada Resource Center, 13710 La Mirada Blvd. Attendees will be encouraged to be a part of a community based solution to prevent property crimes.
In the first half of 2015, residential and vehicle burglaries combined for nearly one-third of the property crimes reported in La Mirada. Of the 438 Part I crimes reported from January to June, over 90 percent were crimes involving stolen property.
Residents are encouraged to attend the meeting, be a part of the solution, and help the Public Safety Team keep La Mirada safe.

Information for Inaugural Olive Fest 5K
La Mirada~The first Olive Fest 5K will take place Saturday, September 19th at La Mirada Regional Park at 13701 Adelfa Drive.
Registration for the fun run and walk will be from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m on the east side of the park across the street from La Mirada High School.
The race will start shortly thereafter, depending on the number of runners.
All participants will receive a commemorative Olive Fest 5K t-shirt.
Proceeds will benefit the La Mirada High School Aquatics and Cross Country programs.
Cost is $35.00, $15.00 for kids 13 and under and $30.00 for seniors.

Congresswoman Sanchez to Appear at La Mirada Olive Fest
La Mirada~United States Congresswoman Linda Sanchez will welcome the community to the 6th Annual La Mirada Olive Fest on Saturday, September 19th.
She will be speaking about the benefits that small businesses bring to the community and her booth will have materials to hand out to fest goers.
Sanchez is the U.S. Representative for California's 38th congressional district, which includes La Mirada, having served in Congress since 2003.
The Congresswoman is scheduled to address the crowd at noon.
Fall Youth Sports Leagues Registration Now Open
Register now for fall youth sports leagues offered by the City of La Mirada. Recreational youth sports offered for the fall season includes Friday Night Football, Volleyball, and Volleytennis. Children ages 5 to 17 are invited to participate.
Get ready to spend Friday nights out at the field, with La Mirada’s semi-annual Friday Night Football league. Open to participants ages 5-14, the league is played with flags and emphasis is on football fundamentals. Friday Night Football games are played at Behringer Park during the fall season. The league cost is $70, and includes one practice during the week and one game on Friday night.
The City’s Youth Volleyball league is back in swing for the fall season. Open to ages 7-17, the league focuses on the basics of volleyball, including bumping, setting, hitting, serving, and defense. The Youth Volleyball league is held at the La Mirada Community Gymnasium and the cost is $65.

West Nile Virus Activity Confirmed in La Mirada
La Mirada~The Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District (GLACVCD) confirmed West Nile virus activity for the first time this year in La Mirada.
GLACVCD encourages residents to take the following safety precautions to protect against mosquito-borne diseases:
Eliminate or manage all sources of standing water to discourage mosquito breeding every week. The work residents do now will make a big difference.
If you are outdoors when mosquitoes are biting, wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts and use an insect repellent containing EPA-registered active ingredient such as DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, and Oil of lemon eucalyptus (PMD). Always apply according to label instructions. Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. Repair or replace screens that have tears or holes.

There is no cure for West Nile virus. One in five persons infected with West Nile virus will exhibit symptoms. Symptoms usually occur between five and 15 days, and can include fever, headache, body aches, nausea, or a skin rash. These symptoms can last for several weeks to months.
One in 150 people infected with the virus will become extremely ill. Severe symptoms include high fever, muscle weakness, neck stiffness, coma, paralysis, and possibly death.

Free La Mirada Fitness Class Continues to Grow
La Mirada~Five-year La Mirada resident Robert Paul Adams is spearheading the way for a new free weekly fitness class that meets three times a week at La Mirada Regional Park.
After Marriage, Robert had reached a weight that was intolerable, and made a commitment to change his lifestyle and started a Tuesday night running group at the park.
After joining Herbalife and putting himself on a diet and workout regimen, he met two individuals that would eventually lead to the creation of this free and local fitness class in La Mirada.
Adams joined forces with Loni Tyler and Wendy Biddle and the three quickly realized there was a community interest in fitness, but a lack of free, organized and easily accessible opportunities to exercise in town.
The solution was the creation of a free workout class that is conducted three times a week and twice a day with the primary objective to provide fitness exercises for the community and information for those seeking a healthier lifestyle.
“We provide the opportunity to create relationships with new individuals and by helping the community get fit, were also unintentionally, but happily knitting the community together,” Adams said.
The group continues to grow and regularly draws over two dozen participants and more.
The class meets on Mondays and Wednesday’s at 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and Fridays at 9:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. the class is usually one-hour long and consists of a full body work out including cardio, upper body, core and legs.
