City birthday celebration

The City of La Mirada is set to celebrate its 65th anniversary as an incorporated city!

A special celebration will be held on Saturday, March 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Neff Estate.

Experience La Mirada’s rich history by touring the Carriage Barn, the George House, and the Neff House, and explore exhibits and a historical timeline showcasing La Mirada’s key milestones.

The celebration will feature a craft fair, food vendors, family-friendly activities, and live entertainment.

Ramifications from Covid-19 shutdowns caused the 60th anniversary to be cancelled in 2020.

La Mirada High School will dedicate its newly remodeled softball field to Jennie Finch, a La Mirada High School alumna and softball legend, on Thursday, March 13th at 5:30 p.m. followed by the Varsity Home Opener against Fullerton High School at 6:00 PM.

Northgate says late 2025 opening

Northgate Market says it plans on opening late this year at the former Market by Superior location at 12721 Valley View Avenue.

The building has been vacant since June of last year when Superior abruptly closed and there has been little to no activity since that time, other than a minor parking lot improvement.

A sign on the window indicates the market has applied for a liquor license.

This past October, Stephen Chavez of Milagro-Chavez Public Relations, told us that a “late 2025” is confirmed.

Milagro-Chavez is the PR agency representing Northgate.

He added the confirmation came from Teresa Blanco, Northgate Market’s Director of Community Wellness & Engagement.

New Creek Park bridge

The new pedestrian/vehicle bridge at Creek Park appears complete.

Built in the 1970’s, the park was innovative for its time, converting a flood control channel into a viable green space for residents to enjoy.

However, after decades of use, the park needs additional major infrastructure improvements, renovations, and enhanced accessibility.

The bridge construction is part of the Creek Park Master Plan approved by City Council that will provide for systematic and cost-effective upgrades to the park.

New condominium project slated for Imperial Highway

A new 42-unit mixed-use residential condominium project will be constructed by Warmington Residential California at 15700 Imperial Highway.

Demolition is expected to begin shortly of the existing two-story office building which is currently at the site. For decades, the building housed the headquarters for the Far East Broadcasting Company-an international Christian radio network.

Including an empty lot located on the back of the property, the project is 2.955-acres in size and will consist of nine detached buildings containing a total of 42 units that are two and three-story in size.

Something unique to La Mirada and a blast to the past, there will be seven three-story live-work units where residents will live above their commercial business that will face Imperial Highway.

The project proposes a total of 110 parking spaces, including two spaces per unit in an enclosed garage, 15 guest parking spaces, and 11 spots for the commercial spaces located in front of the live-work units.

New superintendent

The Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District (NLMUSD) has officially welcomed Dr. Natasha Baker as its new superintendent.

The NLMUSD Board of Education unanimously approved Dr. Baker’s appointment on December 9, 2024, following a rigorous selection process, and she assumed her role at the start of the new year.

Dr. Baker brings a wealth of experience in educational leadership, having served in various administrative roles across California school districts.

Her expertise includes curriculum development, equity initiatives, and fostering partnerships between schools and local communities. “I am honored to lead the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District and work alongside its dedicated educators, staff, and families to ensure every student thrives,” Dr. Baker said in her inaugural address to the district. “Our focus will be on innovation, inclusivity, and creating safe, supportive environments for learning.”

The NLMUSD community has expressed optimism about Dr. Baker’s leadership. Board President Jose Rios praised her vision, stating, “Dr. Baker’s passion for education and her track record of driving positive change make her the ideal leader for our district.”

Parents and teachers alike have welcomed her emphasis on collaboration and transparency.

Baker replaces John Lopez, who departed last year.

School Board meetings now on YouTube

Great news!

The Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District Board (NLMUSD) meetings are now streamed live on YouTube.

Meetings are generally held once, sometimes twice a month, on Mondays. Meetings are scheduled for 6:30 p.m and are subject to change.

This is fantastic and a wonderful use of taxpayer dollars. It allows residents to monitor and/or get involved with the district without the burden of having to use transportation to attend the meetings.

You can watch in the comfort of your own home or wherever you happen to be!

Check out the NLMUSD YouTube channel here.
