Dr. Sokol maintained his practice at 12819 Valley View Avenue since opening it and was very active in La Mirada activities including the La Mirada Chamber of Commerce, The La Mirada Kiwanis Club, The Rio Hondo Optometric Society and many other foundations and clubs.
Dr. Sokol and Myra carried season tickets to the La Mirada Theater for the Performing Arts for many years. They attended Temple Beth Ohr (on Santa Gertrudes and Rosecrans) and educated his four children there.
Stephen’s practice grew profoundly and at one point had over 125,000 patients. Many La Mirada residents were patients of Dr. Sokol at one time or another. He loved to help people to see better and it gave him joy when someone would express to him that, “it was because of him that they were able to see.”
In 2002 Dr. Sokol went into cardiac arrest and was hospitalized for seven months. He then sold the practice to one of his LACO classmates, who still owns and practices in the same location today. Dr. Sokol practiced at his old office for fellow OD’s and continued seeing patients part time until 2013.
Dr. Sokol loved his wife and children. He loved western movies, loved to travel and has been throughout Europe and the U.S. He loved to tell and listen to jokes and was devoted to his friends.
