Essential Strategies for Your Personal Safety (Part 3 of 4)

Preventing Auto Burglary

Vehicle burglary is one of the most common types of crime in our area. Vehicle burglaries are crimes of opportunity, but by taking simple steps you can help reduce the chance of becoming a victim.

Out of Sight, Out of Crime

Many vehicle burglaries are a result of items that are left in plain sight in the passenger compartment of a vehicle. Never leave any valuables in plain view in your vehicle. Either take the items with you or lock them in the trunk of your vehicle. Common valuables stolen include purses and wallets, GPS devices, cell phones, MP3 players, and laptops. People often leave these items inside of their vehicle in plain view because they only plan to be away from the vehicle for a few moments, however it only takes a few seconds to break into a vehicle and take your property.

If you must leave valuables inside of your vehicle, take the time to secure them prior to reaching your destination. Commercial parking lots such as gyms and shopping malls are high target areas for vehicle burglars who may be watching where you conceal items inside of your vehicle prior to exiting. Always be mindful when entering a parking lot of suspicious persons that may be lingering on foot in the area or watching the parking lot from inside of a vehicle.

If any suspicious activity is observed notify the La Mirada Community Sheriff's Station immediately (562) 902-2960. Try to be as observant as possible. Obtain a person description, a vehicle description, and vehicle license plates if possible to help law enforcement.

Security & Your Peace of Mind

Always make sure to properly secure your vehicle windows and door locks when parking your vehicle, even when parking at your own home. Many residents will leave their vehicle windows slightly open due to the summer heat, however this may provide a thief easier access to your vehicle. If you have an audible burglar alarm or other anti theft system, be sure to always arm it. When possible, park in well lit, heavily traveled areas of commercial parking lots. When parking in your driveway at home, motion sensor lights might be the deterrent needed to scare off a potential burglar.
