After tossing around some ideas Erik decided on providing an improvement for the George House, which along with the Neff Mansion are La Mirada's oldest homes. The homes are located at the Neff Park Estate, the site of La Mirada founder Andrew McNally’s former Windermere Ranch.

The George House is named for its long-time residents Jack and Anna George. Jack was the ranch foreman from 1914 until his death in 1960. His wife and daughters remained in the house until 1965.

“I had a few different ideas, but I also had to decide on a project that was attainable financially,” he said, “I tried to think of something I could do that would have a lasting impression.”

When deciding on a project Erik noticed the George House lacked a cement curb edging around it, similar to the one around the Neff Mansion, so he decided a newly installed curb at the George House would dramatically improve the aesthetics and landscaping of the Queen Anne style home.

Erik said the new landscaping curb would provide uniformity for the two houses, and the new boundary would also prevent grasses and weeds from invading the existing garden bed, allowing for simpler landscape maintenance.

When the project was completed, Assistant Director for La Mirada Public Works Gary Sanui said the city was very pleased to provide support, “We gave some direction and some guidance to Erik after he initiated the project. It’s a nice improvement to the house and the park.”

“It’s always a good thing when the city can help out the Boy Scouts. It’s a win for both sides. In the past, they have provided numerous improvements (throughout the city) with different Eagle Projects. We try to support them and offer guidance whenever possible.”

After providing all the necessary documentation, Erik must now appear before an Eagle Scout Board of Review and hopes to hear in December whether or not he obtains his Eagle Scout status.

“He started as Cub Scout when he was six years-old, and it is something he always wanted to do. He is trying to achieve his goal,” said Cathy Moreno, Erik’s very excited mother.

Other La Mirada scouts including Christopher Guerra, Ethan Fison and Louie Lozano from Troop 919, already have achieved an Eagle Scout award.
