What’s Going On With the KFI Tower?

Blinding Lights Are Not Permanent

La Mirada~ Chances are, if you live in Southern California you have noticed it.

Chances are, if you live in the La Mirada area, you can't help but notice it.

The KFI Tower-an iconic monument in La Mirada since 1948-has been running amuck lately, with high intensity, almost blinding, strobe lights blinking, that can be seen throughout the metropolitan basin. Normally the bright lights or on only during the day, and the red ones at night.

We have received numerous emails here at the La Mirada Blog from residents; most expressing the lights are way to bright.

Bob Cymbolin wrote us: "This thing is way too bright and imposing...and it is constantly flashing. Is there any way to stop it? Everyone wants safety, but this high intensity flashing day and night is way overboard. You can see it for miles across the southland."

The original tower collapsed after a single engine plane crashed into it in 2004, killing Jim and Mary Ghosoph, who were traveling to Fullerton Airport from El Monte.  In 2008, a new tower was constructed with new high intensity red flashing lights and other safety upgrades.

La Mirada High Starts School Year Wtih New Principal

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW!

La Mirada~ As La Mirada High students begin classes Thursday, September 9th, a new face will be there to welcome them to the new school year.

Bill Seals took over as the new principal in July, replacing Don Jones, who was assigned to a different school in the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, but has since taken a position in Chino.

In his first year as principal, the challenges he faces are to ensure that the upcoming evaluation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) goes smoothly and that he maintains a good relationship with staff, the students and the community.

"[WASC evaluations are] going to be one of our big undertakings over the course of the year because it's a formal process and it's a report that we write to the state as a staff and along with that is the staff getting to know and the leadership team that we have here," Seals said. "The goal is to get to know the community and get the administrative staff working with our teaching staff and make a productive working relationship and I think we do have a good administrative staff that can do that."

Another goal that Seals wants to achieve in his tenure is to maintain the improvement of Academic Performance Index score, which he gives credit to the previous administration.

"It's our goal to get our school to be an 800 API school and we're getting closer," he said. "We're getting out there and their test scores have improved this year. The staff's going to be proud that their numbers went up and we're going to continue that trend."

City Officials Get Residents Geared up for Undertaking

La Mirada~About 100 residents showed up this past Tuesday evening  for the Valley View Avenue Grade Separation Community Meeting hosted by the cities of La Mirada and Santa Fe Springs at the La Mirada Activity Center.

La Mirada residents look at the plans

The long awaited $75 million project-which is fully funded-is a joint effort between the two cities, Caltrans and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF).

By creating an underpass at the railroad tracks, the project will lower the Valley View/Stage Road intersection, eliminating the railroad crossing, allowing trains to cross over Valley View on a bridge.

With no train delays, this will enable traffic to flow freely, minimize delays, dramatically improve public safety, and reduce noise at the intersection.

The proposed construction schedule has most of the major work beginning early 2011 and continuing through mid-2013.

Most of the residents at the meeting live in the adjacent areas of the project. Their main concern was the hopeful reduction of train horns-a nuisance to a lot of residents for many years.

Years of Delay Give Way for Valley View Avenue-Railroad Project

Valley View Grade SeparationLa Mirada~The Cities of La Mirada and Santa Fe Springs will host an Open House on Tuesday, August 31, to provide an update on the Valley View Avenue Grade Separation project.

This project is a joint effort between the two cities and will involve the construction of an underpass at the intersection of Valley View Avenue and Stage Road. Upon completion of the project, traffic on Valley View will travel underneath the BNSF railroad tracks, thereby reducing traffic delays, noise and emissions from idling vehicles, and improving safety for rail passengers, motorists and pedestrians.

City staff and project personnel will be available to review the project status and construction schedule. The Open House will be held on Tuesday, August 31 at the La Mirada Activity Center. Business owners and tenants are requested to attend the event between 3 and 5 p.m., and residential owners and tenants are requested to attend between 6 and 8 p.m.

For more information about the open house, please contact the La Mirada Department of Public Works at (562) 902-2371 or email vvgsproject@gmail.com.
