La Mirada~Azucar Café in the La Mirada Stater Brothers shopping center is a true escape into a world of fresh tastes and exotic flavor inspirations.

Azucar Café has been open for three months, and is sure to be a new local favorite! Business partners Eddie and Leticia originally had the idea of opening up a Mexican restaurant, but instead they created a new business plan: Azucar Café. The prices are fantastic, the food is fresh, and this Café offers something different than the rest.

Kiwanis Gives Out its Teachers of the Year Awards at La Mirada Schools

La Mirada~The La Mirada Kiwanis community service club recently announced its recipients for its teacher-of-the-year program, picking a "winner" at ten different schools in La Mirada

 

 

"The service club project looks for ways to give back to the schools in a way that directly impacts students, said Debbie Scheibel, past President of La Mirada Kiwanis and currently Lt. Governor for Kiwanis International-Division 30.

Each recepient, chosen by their peers, received a gift bag containing ream of paper, notebook, and other classroom supplies for immediate use, and a $200 Staples voucher.

At La Mirada High School the recipient was Andrea Wood, "Teachers like Ms. Wood make a difference", said La Mirada Kiwanian Richard Trujillo, who along with former Norwalk-La Mirada Superintendent Ginger Shattuck, now a La Mirada Kiwanian, delivered the package. Trujillo is pictured, right, with La Mirada High Principal Bill Seals and Ms. Wood.

Special thanks go out to Extra Hands Advertising and project Chairpersons Scheibel and Adrienne Medrano, who also put together the gift bags.

Temple to Host Blood Drive

La Mirada~Don't tell Dracula, but you can come give to the Red Cross at a blood drive this Tuesday, October 12th from 1-7 p.m. at Temple Beth Ohr in La Mirada, 15721 E. Rosecrans Ave.

The entire community is invited and refreshments will be served.

La Mirada~The city will host its annual Senior Fall Festival on Thursday, Oct. 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the La Mirada Activity Center, located at 13810 La Mirada Boulevard.

This country-western event will feature door prizes, raffle, games, and live entertainment by the Country Plus Band.

Friends of La Mirada Library Book Sale

La Mirada~The Friends of the La Mirada Public Library hosts its next semi-annual Book Sale to support the library on Saturday, Oct 9 from 9:00a to 3:00p at the La Mirada Activity Center.

The center is located at 13801 La Mirada Blvd in La Mirada

A wide selection of high-quality used hardback and paperback books as well as audio and video materials will be on sale at bargain-basement prices.

Beginning at 2:00 p.m., customers may fill and buy bags of books for only $3.

Seniors Treated to Live Music From Local Jazz Band

Breezwood Village residents enjoy the music of "The Brass Ring"

La Mirada~Residents of La Mirada's retirement homes were recently treated to a performance by a local jazz band.

All four members of the group are juniors at La Mirada High School.

The band, The Brass Ring, performed at The Palms on September 6th, The Vistas on September 7th, and the Breezwood Village on September 8th, all in La Mirada.

"The residents were tapping their feet, singing along, and having a great time", said Amy Hyde, Assistant Manager of Breezwood Village, "They just love to see young people play, and they believe in the importance of supporting  music education. They didn't want them to leave!"

Over 30 people enjoyed the music at Breezwood, with about 30 each at The Vistas and The Palms.

Performers include: Stuart Wegner, tuba; Josh Saenz, flugelhorn, trumpet, cornet; Amber Palmer, flute; and Christian Ocampo, drums.

FOUR ROBBED AT CANDLEWOOD GOLF COURSE

Whittier~Talk About a bad day on the Golf Course.

Four people were robbed at gunpoint around 6:30 PM this evening at Candlewood Golf Course.

Taken were four cell phones and two black wallets.

There are four suspects at large 16-19 years of age; gang-type with white t-shirts.

Fifth suspect: male older adult, 20-30, possibly wearing dark sweater.

All suspects last seen south-bound through the golf course, towards Meyer Avenue.

LM Theatre Hosts Tribute Friday

TONIGHT!

La Mirada~Two of the hottest tribute bands will appear at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts for "Tribute Friday", tonight. Show starts at 8 PM, with happy hour beginning at 6:00 PM.

Based in Southern California, the critically acclaimed tribute show, Bella Donna, re-creates Stevie Nicks in concert. The band, named after the artist's double-platinum album, portrays the singer and her music (solo and with Fleetwood Mac), in a stunningly accurate depiction.

Also, appearing will be Desperado, The Premier Eagles Tribute, consists of five talented members who have set out to resurrect the melody, harmony and musicianship of Southern California's own chart-topping Eagles.
