LMHS Basketball Girls Walk Out on Head Coach

SPORTS

021114 17:20 UPDATE-Girls Basketball coach Darryl Gowens has been fired by La Mirada High principal Bill Seals.

Gowens told the La Mirada Blog that after a positive morning meeting at the school he was then pulled aside by principal Seals around 4:45 p.m., moments before boarding the bus to traveling to John Glenn for a scheduled game.

La Mirada~Most of the La Mirada Girls Varsity basketball team walked out of practice this past Thursday due to an apparent dispute with head coach Darryl Gowens, resulting in a forfeiture of Friday night's scheduled contest against Cerritos High.

The issue seems to stem from some of the girls and their parents claiming the first year coach has been over-aggressive in his style.

Gowens says he has encouraged the girls all season and has Facebook posts to prove it and added, "At the end of the day it's about maturity, it's about growing up and it's about accountability".

Two of the girls parents from the programs booster club wished to remain nameless, but they did talk to us and disagreed with Gowens assessment saying he has "mentally abused" the girls with words and other actions.

It is unclear at this time how this will affect the Matadores last two games of the season tomorrow at John Glenn and the final game of the season at home against Norwalk on Thursday, which is also senior night.

REVIEW: Award Winning ‘God of Carnage’ Now Playing Through February 16th at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts

Jamison Jones, Amy Sloan, Maura Vincent and Hugo Armstrong star in the LA MIRADA THEATRE FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS & McCOY RIGBY ENTERTAINMENT production of GOD OF CARNAGE, written by Yasmina Reza and directed by Michael Arabian.

La Mirada~With a talented cast and production team, the Tony Award-winning play God of Carnage was successful in its comedic ventures to keep audience members at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts completely riveted. Director Michael Arabian commits to the challenging task of staging French playwright Yasmina Reza’s complex and sagacious tale.

God of Carnage revolves around two sets of Brooklyn parents meeting to resolve an altercation between their eleven-year-old sons. As the play begins, tactful and polite exchanges are made, but by the end of the night, four professional adults find themselves at a stand-off with each other that test the limits of human nature.

The small cast of four, starring actors Hugo Armstrong, Jamison Jones, Amy Sloan, and Maura Vincent, demonstrated outstanding chemistry in a story with such unexpected twists and turns. Respectively, each actor portrayed their unique character in an impeccable manner. Landing one punch line after another, audience members spent most of the hour-and-half run in hysterical laughter. God of Carnage didn’t just keep the audience laughing, but contained various shocking, unpredictable moments that had them perplexed, yet excited. With a successful first weekend, God of Carnage is quickly becoming characterized as a must-see for all theater fanatics.

CITY: La Mirada Continues to Progress in 2014

La Mirada City officials are looking forward to building on recent accomplishments in 2014 as the City continues to provide a safe community, improve its fiscal position, improve its aging infrastructure, attract new businesses, and maintain the community’s high quality of life.

“2013 saw the City make considerable progress towards many of its strategic goals, such as ensuring a safe community, improving its infrastructure, and promoting a strong local economy,” says City Manager Jeff Boynton.  “We will continue on that course this year.”

The City continues to recover from the Great Recession, state grabs of local tax dollars, and the loss of redevelopment in recent years.  City officials are encouraged by recent economic signs in which sales, property, and transient occupancy (hotel users) tax revenues grew over the last year.  The FY 2013-14 budget, adopted last June, held a slight surplus and the City maintains modest reserve levels.

Though encouraged by improvements to the economy, the City remains committed to its prudent fiscal management practices and conservative approach to revenue forecasting.  Basic services continue to be delivered with a lean workforce of some 65 full-time employees, about a 33 percent decrease from five years ago.  Hourly City employees were reduced by a similar amount over this time.  The City continues to make extensive use of contracted services to achieve cost efficiencies while meeting the community’s needs.
