Peters retired in 2000 after 37 years in banking, opting a year later to serve her community as a volunteer. She was a La Mirada Senior Council member for 11 years, twice as president. Appointed in 2006 to the Historical Preservation Advisory Council, Peters joined other HPAC members in presenting the history of La Mirada to local students. She was HPAC chairman in 2010 and currently works to see that the George House and Neff Mansion history is preserved. Area residents may see her working monthly as a Docent at the Neff House.

Peters earned a La Mirada "Senior Spirit of Service" award in 2008, and also received a "Tapestry of Sequoyah," (he created the Cherokee syllaby) presented to Peters by Chadwick Corktassel Smith, Chief of the Cherokee Nation, for her work on a California/Oklahoma project.
