Biola University Breaks Ground for New Talbot Building
La Mirada~Biola University broke ground for its new Talbot East Building this morning at 11:30 A.M. The ceremony was marked the "Miracle of May 2010" in commemoration of the miraculous influx of funds during a community-wide 40-day fast for the project's funding.
On March 16, Biola President Dr. Barry Corey asked students, faculty, and administration to commit to fasting one meal over the next forty days. Since that time, a total of more than $6.4 million has been amassed through generous donations. More than 80% of that number came in within the first five days of May, moving up the expected date for breaking ground on the project, originally scheduled for June 1. Money was slow in coming, according to Dr. Barry Corey, during the last year and half. As of last March, only around $9.2 million had been raised.

SUBURBAN LEAGUE FOOTBALL: Talented Class of Seniors Will Provide Plenty of Excitement
Editor's note: "The Guru" will once again cover Suburban League Football exclusively for the La Mirada Blog this upcoming football season. Spring practice is underway, and believe it or not, it's not to early to start talking football! The following is the first of many pieces to run from now, until the final play of the football season in December.
Well Ladies and Gentleman, The Guru has returned, with high school football season just around the corner (more like 120 days away)! I am here today with a small preview of the best players returning next season for each team in the Suburban League! This will be the year of burners, as each team will have a bona-fide game breaker; and when you have one of these guys, you can definitely win at any stage of the game.
Artesia: Had a lot of players last year that where young; had to play behind their now graduating big play threat, Travon Payne.
Bellflower: Returning RB Larreon White was a big play threat last for the Buccaneers amassing a total of 600 all-purpose yards. The kid can really fly, and I look for him to be one of the league's best players this upcoming season.
Cerritos: The Dons didn't do very well in losing every game last year, but they should be remarkably better when you consider they have the do-everything-guy in Aaron Francis. The kid played in all three phases of the game and is going to be a game-breaker next year for the Dons. He is going to a senior next year, so let's see what he has in store for his final stanza.
LA MIRADA HIGH BASEBALL CAPTURES SUBURBAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP
La Mirada~The La Mirada Boys baseball team has captured it's second straight, and 11th of the past 12, Suburban League Crowns, with a come-from-behind victory over second-place Bellflower here today, 8-3, on Senior Day. The Mats will start the playoffs next week with a home game, more than likely. See story below.
The Matadores celebrate, moments after their league-clinching victory. |
La Mirada~For the second straight game, the Matadores overcame a 3-0 deficit to win a crucial Suburban League game.
This time it resulted in a league championship on Senior Day.
La Mirada wore down a valiant Bellflower squad Tuesday to notch a 7-3 victory, the 10th in a row and 17th out of the last 18 to give coach Kim Brooks and the program an 11th league crown in the past 12 years.
Both teams will square off in a somewhat anti-climatic game Thursday in Bellflower to close off the regular season, although the Buccaneers (17-6, 8-3) could use a win to finish in second place and the Matadores (20-8, 11-1) could use it for playoff rankings purposes and to avoid the possibility of a double digit-loss season.
