Kiwanis Gives Out its Teachers of the Year Awards at La Mirada Schools

La Mirada~The La Mirada Kiwanis community service club recently announced its recipients for its teacher-of-the-year program, picking a "winner" at ten different schools in La Mirada

"Our project looks for ways to give back to the schools in a way that directly impacts students, said Debbie Scheibel, past President of La Mirada Kiwanis and currently Lt. Governor for Kiwanis International-Division 30.

Each recepient, chosen by their peers, received a gift bag containing a ream of paper, notebook, and other classroom supplies for immediate use, and a $200 Staples voucher.

At La Mirada High School the recipient was Andrea Wood, "Teachers like Ms. Wood make a difference", said La Mirada Kiwanian Richard Trujillo, who along with former Norwalk-La Mirada Superintendent Ginger Shattuck, now a La Mirada Kiwanian, delivered the package. Trujillo is pictured, at right, with La Mirada High Principal Bill Seals and Ms. Wood.

Residential Burglary

A residential burglary was reported on the 13000 block of Clearwood Ave. Numerous valuable coins were
taken from the location.

Vehicle Burglary

There were four vehicle burglaries reported.

A stereo and CDs were taken from a vehicle on the 16100 block of Rosecrans Ave.

Tools were taken from a work truck on the 16000 block of Summershade Ave.

Stereo equipment was stolen from a vehicle on the11600 block of Hollyview Ave.

A wallet and cell phone were taken from a vehicle on the 13300 block of Beach Blvd.

Art Colony Offers Free Demonstration of Straw Art

La Mirada~Internationally recognized, Mr. Owens-Celli, Director of the American Museum of Straw Art in Long Beach will demonstrate the use of straw as an art/craft medium on Monday, November 1st from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Arts Colony of La Mirada meeting.

The public is invited to attend this free event.

The club meets on the first Monday of the month at the La Mirada Resource Center, 13710 La Mirada Blvd.

Halloweenfest Scheduled at Neff Park

La Mirada~Costumed superheroes, fairy princesses, ghosts and goblins will fill the night with laughter at the City of La Mirada's annual Halloweenfest on Sunday, October 31, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the historic Neff Estate.


The event will feature a haunted maze, flashlight tours of the Neff Mansion, Jack-O-Lantern contest, games, crafts and tasty treats for sale. This family-oriented event is perfect for all ages.

A costume contest for patrons and their pets will take place throughout the evening. Arrive early to enter and win!

La Mirada Symphony Launches New Season

La Mirada~ La Mirada Symphony's new season begins tonight with the New Beginnings concert; the first concert of the season, to be held at 8:00 p.m. at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts.  Guest Conductor Alan Mautner will bring the sounds of Mozart, Brahms, and Mendelssohn through the hall to please the audience. 

Thi Nguyen, considered to be the leading young Vietnamese violinist of his generation, will enhance Brahm's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra.  A great start to an exciting season!

Business partners Eddie and Leticia originally had the idea of opening up a Mexican restaurant, but instead they created a new business plan: Azucar Café. The prices are fantastic, the food is fresh, and this Café offers something different than the rest.

La Mirada~Don't tell Dracula, but you can come give to the Red Cross at a blood drive this Tuesday, October 12th from 1-7 p.m. at Temple Beth Ohr in La Mirada, 15721 E. Rosecrans Ave.

La Mirada~The city will host its annual Senior Fall Festival on Thursday, Oct. 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the La Mirada Activity Center, located at 13810 La Mirada Boulevard.

This country-western event will feature door prizes, raffle, games, and live entertainment by the Country Plus Band.
