Public Safety Team Issues 57 Citations on July 4th
La Mirada~On July 4, the La Mirada Public Safety Team enforced fireworks regulations by canvassing the community and responding to calls for service. The Team consists of Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputies, along with City Public Safety and Code Enforcement Officers patrolling the City.
This year the Public Safety Team issued 57 citations for illegal fireworks violations, and one citation for a safe and sane violation. The La Mirada Community Sheriff's Station received 32 calls for service on the night of July 4 pertaining to fireworks.
In La Mirada, discharging of fireworks on City-owned property, including parks, streets and sidewalks, is prohibited. The use of "safe and sane fireworks" is only allowed on July 4 from 3 to 10 p.m.
Latest La Mirada Crime Report; Attempted Robbery on Chesire
The following is the crime report for La Mirada June 30th-July 6th, 2014:
Robbery-An attempted robbery was reported on the 14800 block of Cheshire St. The suspect fled the location before Deputies arrived. There were no injuries or loss reported. The incident remains under investigation.
Aggravated Assault-An assault was reported on the 16700 block of Knott Ave. The victim's vehicle was struck by another vehicle at the location. An assault stemming from a domestic dispute was reported on the 14800 block of Cheshire St. No injuries were reported.
Residential Burglary-A residential burglary was reported on the 14100 block of Priscilla St. A window was broken at the location. It is unknown if any items were stolen from the residence.
Vehicle Burglary-A vehicle burglary was reported on the 13300 block of Beach Blvd. A vehicle burglary was reported on the 12300 block of La Mirada Blvd.
Sugar and Spice Bakery to Host Grand Opening Celebration
La Mirada~Sugar & Spice Bakery and Deli will host their Grand Opening celebration Saturday July 12th from 6 a.m.-6 p.m.
Free samples of Boars Head deli meat and cheeses will be available.

La Mirada Group to Host Fundraiser for Children Fighting Cancer
Children fighting cancer will benefit from a fundraiser sponsored by a La Mirada group on Friday, July 18 at the Friendly Hills Country Club.
The “Reach for the Stars” event will be presented by members of From Maddi’s Closet, a nonprofit organization started nearly a decade ago after Madison Leslie Holmes lost her battle with cancer at four years of age.
Maddi’s family and friends began the organization to carry on the extraordinary spirit of generosity and compassion the young girl had shown to other children fighting cancer. Maddi had frequently befriended other children undergoing treatment, and given her own toys and clothing to those in need. She even asked her family members to go and sit with other children who were more sick, frightened or lonely when they had no family members at the hospital.
Since its early days, participation in From Maddi’s Closet has grown, and the organization has broadened its efforts to support children with cancer. The group now raises funds for pediatric cancer research. The organization also offers support to ill children and their families whose special emotional and financial needs are unmet by other assistance programs. The group provides many services – from an annual toy drive to events and activities geared for patients at CHOC and Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
Latest La Mirada Crime Report; Computers Stolen From Biola Avenue
Other Structure Burglary-A burglary to a garage was reported on the 14500 block of Calpella St. A bicycle was stolen from an open garage at the residence.
Vehicle Burglary-A window smash burglary was reported on the 14300 La Mesa Dr. Two bibles were stolen from the vehicle. A vehicle burglary occurred on the 14600 block of Valley View Ave. Various items were stolen from the vehicle.
Grand Theft-Four grand thefts were reported last week. A theft of a tail gate from a truck was reported on the 16100 block of Rosecrans Ave. Two desktop computers were reported stolen from a work station on the 13800 block of Biola Ave. A suspect was arrested near Rosecrans Ave and Valley View Ave for stealing copper wiring and other items. Various items including a third row seat and GPS were reported stolen from an unlocked vehicle parked on the 14200 block of Firestone Blvd.
Grand Theft Vehicle-A vehicle was reported stolen from the 13500 block of Wilfrey Ave. A vehicle reported stolen from La Mirada last week was recovered on the 12200 block of La Mirada Blvd.
The History of Independence Day and Fireworks in La Mirada

The 4th of July has been celebrated in La Mirada for over 120 of our Nation’s 237 years of existence. It could be longer; this is just what we have learned from documents found during research.
In the late nineteenth century, ranch hands on Andrew McNally’s Windermere Ranch enjoyed the Fourth of July by eating cut watermelon and resting underneath the shade of pepper trees.
La Mirada Blog Facebook fan Sharon Collins-Shepard recalls the first fireworks stands appearing in La Mirada in the late 1950’s, “I moved to La Mirada in 1955. I'm thinking the first fireworks stands went up around ‘58 or ‘59. They use to have one on the corner of Valley View and Rosecrans where the Market Basket was (now a Pep Boys).”
We’re not sure what year the first organized celebration of fireworks occurred in La Mirada, but it appears to be the early 70’s.
We believe 1977 was the last year of the annual Independence Day fireworks shows at Regional Park, before it was cancelled due to crowd control issues and the famous rock-throwing incident that shut down the show.
In The Kiwanis Club of La Mirada history manual, historian Mark Royston writes the community fireworks show was resurrected eight years later in 1985 when member Ari Barendrecht suggested they organize their own event and hold it at La Mirada High School’s Goodman Stadium on July 4th of every year.
The reemergence of the event was a success.
Water Outage on Costa Mesa Drive
La Mirada~There has been a water service interruption for residents on Costa Mesa Drive.
Fans on the La Mirada Blog Facebook page have indicated the outage began last night.
Large trucks have also been spotted working in the area.
It is unknown how many residents are affected at this time.
5th Annual La Mirada Olive Fest Coming Saturday September 20th
La Mirada~The 5th Annual La Mirada Olive Fest (formerly the La Mirada Blog Fest), presented by the La Mirada Blog in association with the La Mirada Community Foundation, is set for Saturday, September 20th at La Mirada Regional Park from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.
The free event, which celebrates the history of La Mirada, along with its artistic and musical heritage, will feature live entertainment, an art walk, vendors selling arts & crafts, kids activities, live music featuring La Mirada bands, food from local restaurants, an antique car show and more!
Various community businesses, service groups and organizations also will be represented.

The La Mirada Girls Softball Association (8u Gold All-Star Team) continues its season with an extremely impressive record. The team of eight and nine year olds began the season with a second place finish at the Mirada Madness Tournament over Memorial Day Weekend.
The girls then lost in the semi-finals in the Field of Dreams tournament in La Habra but finished strong with a first place finish at the Summer Slam tournament in North Torrance.
The girls recently finished third in the LA/South Bay District tournament in Norwalk/Downey which qualifies them to compete in the state tournament in Lancaster from July 4th through the 6th. The team has an overall record of 15-5-1 and has had contributions from each and every player on the roster.
The team has had great pitching performances from Madison Foote, Kailey Vasquez & Jaclyn Ibarra who have a combined ERA of 1.90. They also have a great defense led by Katie Jaime at shortstop, Gaby Gandara at 2nd base and Julissa Detrinidad at catcher.
The girls average six runs per game and have had key hits in crucial situations from Jordan Vasquez, Lauren Amezcua, Madison Becerra, Mia Rafael, Rosalyn Gonzalez & Taylor Parra which has been monumental for the team.
LM Regional is the Place to be on 3rd of July
La Mirada’s annual Independence Celebration will be held on Thursday, July 3, from 4 to 9 p.m. at La Mirada Regional Park. The celebration will include live music, a patriotic program and fireworks show.
This celebration is one of La Mirada’s most popular events of the year. Don’t miss live music by Motown/Disco band “Yard Sale,” and Country tribute band “Country Nation.” A variety of tasty food will be available for purchase by La Mirada’s local community service and athletic organizations. The celebration will conclude with a patriotic program and fireworks spectacular. Bring the family and celebrate our nation’s independence.
The City’s Splash! Buccaneer Bay Waterpark will also be open this day from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and is located behind the park.
