La Mirada Headed Back to Semifinal

Matadores lose coin flip; southeast semi-final to be hosted by Cathedral

Compton~La Mirada beat Dominguez last Friday night 55-13 in the CIF-SS Southeast Quarterfinal  and will advance to a semifinal for the first time since 2012.

The Matadores will travel to Cathedral High School in Los Angeles for the Friday contest after losing the coin flip conducted by CIF officials this past Saturday morning.

The game never seemed to be close after Sei-J Lauago ran back the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown.

After taking a 31-7 at halftime, the Matadores held Dominguez at bay in the second half with a defense that continues to surge.

Tristan Meyer, the starting junior home-grown quarterback for the Mats completed 9 of 15 passes for 205 yards in his first taste of post-season football as the starter.

Dominguez had 250 rushing yards compared to La Mirada’s 136, but had only 31 total yards passing.

La Mirada had only 80 more total yards than Dominguez, 341 to 261 and the Dons actually possessed the ball more; with the Matadores holding the ball for a little over 28 minutes and the Dons having the ball a little over 19.

La Mirada Head Coach Mike Moschetti downplayed the significance of playing on the road this Friday, “We don’t care where we play.”

Including his first two seasons as co-coach with Ollie Lynch, Moschetti has reached the CIF playoffs all eight seasons as head coach of the Matadores and has captured the Suburban League title in six of those eight years including a CIF title in 2009 with Lynch.

Before Moschetti came aboard, La Mirada hadn’t won a league title in eight years.

Also, La Mirada now owns the state record for consecutive section playoff appearances at 36 after Long Beach Poly was declared ineligible following the forfeiture of games this season. The two teams had been tied since 1980.

Holiday Season is Busy Time for La Mirada Service Clubs

La Mirada Rotary Needs Volunteers and Donations

Rotary Club of La Mirada needs your help to make the annual “Clothes for Kids” holiday shopping event a success in 2015.

Rotary is planning to again contribute more than $5,000 to the “Clothes for Kids” shopping event, but needs your support to address growing needs in the community.

You can help buy new, warm clothes for children in La Mirada this holiday season by donating or volunteering at the event.  Each $150 contributed to the “Clothes for Kids” project will sponsor an additional child, but contributions of any amount will be appreciated.

Children are selected to participate in the event by La Mirada Elementary Schools.  Each child brings a list of needed items such as jackets, sweaters, pants, shoes and socks.

Community volunteers are also needed to help children shop for clothes at the Marshalls Department Store in La Mirada, which will open early on Wednesday, Dec. 9 for this special holiday season event.

After the shopping, the children will be transported by bus to the La Mirada Activity Center to meet Santa Claus, enjoy a snack, donated by Chick-fil-A in La Habra, and receive a wrapped toy gift.  Students then return to school.

Lois Lowry’s Newbery Award-Winning “Number the Stars” Makes Its L.A. Premiere at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts

La Mirada~Phantom Projects Theatre Group will bring Lois Lowry’s dramatic story about the Danish Resistance during World War II to life at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, one-day-only, November 19th, 2015. Tickets can be obtained by calling the La Mirada Theatre Box Office at 562 944 9801 or visiting: PhantomProjects.com.

The novel, which debuted in 1990, is based on one of the biggest selling books aimed at young audiences. But, as FORBES indicated in a feature on the troupe, “Phantom Projects isn’t children’s theatre, its powerful theatre aimed at one of the hardest audiences to reach.”

The story centers on ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen (Veronica McFarlane), who lives with her family in Copenhagen in 1943. She becomes a part of the events related to the rescue of the Danish Jews, when thousands of Jews were helped to reach neutral ground in Sweden in order to avoid being deported to concentration camps. She risks her life to help her best friend, Ellen Rosen (Molly Malia Arii), by pretending that Ellen is Annemarie's late older sister Lise, who had died earlier in the war as a result of her work with the Danish Resistance.

The production, under the direction of Phantom Projects’ co-founder and Producing Artistic Director Steve Cisneros, is a faithful adaptation of the book. In anticipation of the premiere, the entire cast and creative team was presented with special 25th Anniversary Editions of the book, signed by the author herself, Lois Lowry.
