Buena Park to Shut Down La Mirada Boulevard for Three-Day Festival
Buena Park~City Council members here recently voted to allow La Mirada Boulevard to be closed for three days for the 31st OC Korean Arirang Festival and La Mirada officials say it is impractical and may have a negative impact on surrounding neighborhoods.
The Korean cultural celebration, which will feature a wide variety of shows and food, is taking place September 26th through the 28th on La Mirada Boulevard. The roadway would be closed to traffic between Beach Blvd. and Alondra Blvd. from 10 p.m. on Thursday Sept. 26, to 6 a.m. on Monday Sept. 29, with westbound lanes not expected to be open until 10 a.m. on Monday.
The closure is entirely within Buena Park, but it is right at La Mirada’s southern boundary.
La Mirada city officials say serious traffic issues are expected to result from the Buena Park decision and major traffic impacts are expected to result from the closure throughout the weekend according to a statement released to the La Mirada Blog.
La Mirada city officials have repeatedly expressed concerns to Buena Park that a closure for such an extended period of time will create an extreme hardship for the traveling public and result in parking and noise issues in the surrounding neighborhoods.
They urged Buena Park to consider a more suitable location for the event that wouldn’t have such potential negative impacts on motorists and local residents. These concerns went mostly ignored, the statement read.
“La Mirada city staff spoke against the closure at Buena Park’s City Council meeting when this item was discussed,” says La Mirada City Manager Jeff Boynton.
“Additionally, we sent correspondence to Buena Park officials reinforcing our concerns and requesting Buena Park consider an alternate location for the event.”
The Buena Park City Council voted to approve the event’s La Mirada Blvd. location anyway, on a 3-1 vote, with Councilwoman Elizabeth Swift voting against the closure.
Kelly Oh, Arirang Festival Foundation of Orange County representative told us, “We are trying to comply with the city’s (La Mirada) concerns. We will be providing quality programs and shows and we hope La Mirada residents will enjoy it as well.”
This past October, the 30th annual event took place in Buena Park within the confines of the McComber Shopping Center at the southeast corner of Beach Blvd. and Malvern Avenue.

La Mirada Group to Host Fundraiser for Children Fighting Cancer
Children fighting cancer will benefit from a fundraiser sponsored by a La Mirada group on Friday, July 18 at the Friendly Hills Country Club.
The “Reach for the Stars” event will be presented by members of From Maddi’s Closet, a nonprofit organization started nearly a decade ago after Madison Leslie Holmes lost her battle with cancer at four years of age.
Maddi’s family and friends began the organization to carry on the extraordinary spirit of generosity and compassion the young girl had shown to other children fighting cancer. Maddi had frequently befriended other children undergoing treatment, and given her own toys and clothing to those in need. She even asked her family members to go and sit with other children who were more sick, frightened or lonely when they had no family members at the hospital.
Since its early days, participation in From Maddi’s Closet has grown, and the organization has broadened its efforts to support children with cancer. The group now raises funds for pediatric cancer research. The organization also offers support to ill children and their families whose special emotional and financial needs are unmet by other assistance programs. The group provides many services – from an annual toy drive to events and activities geared for patients at CHOC and Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
