Construction at Intersection to Last Through May
La Mirada~Commuters might be temporarily inconvenienced, but when finished, the intersection of Valley View/Alondra in La Mirada will have some nice improvements.
"The intersection itself, when finished, will be done completely in concrete", said Public Works Project Coordinator, Gary Sanui, "there will be some traffic issues, and some inconvenience, but we will be minimizing the impact as much as possible".
The project is needed in anticipation of increased street-traffic due to the future I-5 Widening Project that will affect La Mirada. That project will widen Interstate 5 from the LA/Orange County line to the 605 freeway.

MATADORE PLAYOFF WEEK
Matadore Boys & Girls Draw Tough First Round Opponents; Both Games on the Road
La Mirada~It looked as if the La Mirada Matadores boys basketball team was going to miss the CIF playoffs for the first time since 1992-in fact, we posted as much on our Twitter feed.
But, much to our dismay, and with egg on our face, we digress, and are pleased to report the Matadores (10-19, 5-7), were picked as an at-large bid in Division 3AA by the CIF selection committee and will travel to play North High School of Torrance Wednesday night, beginning at 7pm.
The young Matadores will play a North team that finished its Pioneer League schedule with six straight wins.
La Mirada, despite losing four of its last five, has made vast improvements since the beginning of the campaign. First year head coach Steve Schuster, has had his team playing competitively in the Suburban League, despite having a very young team-if not the youngest.
An on-court incident recently during the game at Mayfair, resulted in the exit of Roger Hamel, and his Dad, Roger Sr. from the team, and has opened up the door for Sharad Patel to take over the three-point shooting duties for the Mats. A pure shooting senior, Patel has excelled since the change.

Traffic Mishaps plague La Mirada Area; Chase ATM Smashed Up
Whittier/La Mirada~A couple of freak traffic incidents occurred in the La Mirada area this past Super Bowl Weekend.
On Saturday night, around 8 pm, a man driving a westbound vehicle on Telegraph Road in Whittier County allegedly made a left hand turn in front of a vehicle traveling eastbound at Telechron Road. The vehicle ended up on it's side. See the video available on our YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/lamiradablog
Sometime Saturday night or Sunday morning, a vehicle smashed up the ATM at the Chase Bank drive-thru, 15200 Rosecrans Avenue in La Mirada. By indications of our photos, it appears the driver entered the drive-thru the wrong way.

In the Mayfair game, Roger Hamel tried his best to keep his team in the game by hitting six three-pointers and scoring 24 points overall for the Matadores (5-13, 1-8).

90’s Rat Pack Down to One; Dames Not Running
La Mirada~That sound you hear is the changing of the guard of the La Mirada City Council.
The process continues to evolve as another incumbent has decided to not run for re-election.
Mayor Pete Dames, elected to the council in 1994,
Sarega, Mowles and Jones Turn in Papers; DeRuse, Brown Join In
La Mirada~Andrew Sarega and Planning Commissioner Larry Mowles turned in their papers to city hall yesterday-for the La Mirada City Council race-joining Councilman Steve Jones who turned in his last week.
There are three remaining potential candidates who have pulled papers but have not yet turned them in, Councilman Pete Dames, Community Services Commissioner, Steve DeRuse, and attorney Paul R. Brown.
Candidate's have until Wednesday to turn in papers.
DeRuse indicated to the Blog last week that he would be filing any day now.
There are three seats up for grabs in March, with the big question being: Will Pete Dames run or not?
Incumbents in La Mirada usually having an easy time winning elections. If Dames chooses to run again, it could set up a showdown between Commissioners Mowles and DeRuse for the remaining open seat vacated by a retiring Hal Malkin.
UPDATE: Steve DeRuse and Paul R. Brown both filed their nomination papers today and have qualified for the election, according to city clerk, Anne Haraksin.
So far, of the six potential candidates that have pulled papers, only Mayor Pete Dames has not returned his yet.

Vehicle involved in shooting stops just east of La Mirada city limits
Santa Fe Springs~A car-to-car freeway shooting occurred around 9:40 pm Wednesday night at the 5 freeway and Carmenita Road.
The minivan hit by gunshots exited the freeway at Rosecrans Avenue and traveled east eventually stopping just before Marquardt Avenue.
John Estrada, 17, of Lakewood was pronounced dead a short time later after being transported to a local hospital. The other two victims in the vehicle in their 20's and 30's are in stable condition.
Police officers closed down the northbound lanes of the freeway between Rosecrans and Carmenita, looking for clues and evidence.
With essentially two crime scenes to deal with, on the freeway and on Rosecrans, deputies received assistance from the Lakewood/Cerritos and Pico Rivera sheriff stations and the California Highway Patrol.
Officials are still searching for a motive in this case.
