Weekend Closures Planned for I-5 in Santa Fe Springs/La Mirada Area
La Mirada/Santa Fe Springs~Motorists in Southern California, more particularly the La Mirada area, should allow for extra time this weekend as road closure plans could alter traveling plans.
Caltrans is advising northbound Santa Ana Freeway (Interstate 5) motorists from Orange County heading into Los Angeles County could expect delays of 60 to 90 during an extended closure from Valley View Avenue to Carmenita Road that begins Saturday, November 16 at 12:01 a.m. and continues through Monday, Nov. 18 at 5 a.m.
The northbound I-5 on-ramp at Valley View Avenue will be CLOSED beginning Friday November 15th at 8 p.m. and reopening at 5:00 a.m. Monday.
Also, CLOSED throughout the weekend will be one of three lanes on northbound I-5 from Valley View Avenue to Carmenita Road and the freeway connector transition from westbound State Route 91 to northbound I-5.
Also, two directional FULL FREEWAY CLOSURES on northbound I-5 only from Valley View Avenue to Carmenita Road will take place overnight Saturday (12:01 a.m. to 7 a.m.) and Sunday (1 a.m. to 5 a.m).
During the weekend all southbound I-5 lanes will remain OPEN for motorists throughout the weekend.
La Mirada Bobby Sox Offering Early Registration Discount This Weekend
La Mirada~A brand new Board of Directors is anxious to kick off the season as La Mirada Bobby Sox is offering early registration the next two Saturday’s November 16th and 23rd.
Bobby Sox Softball is a fast pitch girls softball league for girls ages 4-18 of all skill levels.
The early signups will be Stater Bros. and Albertsons in La Mirada from 9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. on both days.
The discounted price for residents is $100 The non-resident cost is $110, with a chance to earn back all registration fees offered.
If returning players bring a new player to register, both get $5.00 their fees.
The early registration period ends January 1st and after that all registrants pay $110.00.
February 1st is the last day for registering and there will be a registration table at the Neff Barn (14300 San Cristobal Dr), during first team meetings. After that registration is considered late and will increase to $125.00. LMBS accepts cash, money order, personal checks, and credit card (25.00 fee for returned checks)

La Mirada Crime Report November 4-10
Aggravated Assault-An assault occurred on the 15000 block of Imperial Hwy. Three suspects were taken into custody after a physical altercation erupted with a male victim in the parking lot of a local business. The suspects had fled the scene, but were eventually apprehended. The investigation is ongoing.
Residential Burglary-A burglary was reported on the 15100 block of Cheshire St. It remains unknown if any property was taken. An incident occurred on the 14300 block of Elmrock Ave. Jewelry and a laptop computer were stolen from the home.
Vehicle Burglary-A burglary was reported on the 14900 block of Gagely Ave. Various items were taken. A window smash burglary was reported on the 15200 block of Santa Gertrudes Ave. A bag containing cosmetics and an e-book were stolen.
Be Aware of Scammers Posing as Utility Workers in La Mirada
La Mirada~The La Mirada Public Safety Team is reminding residents to be aware of various scams targeting utility customers. Recent incidents include scams that demand immediate payment for allegedly past due electricity bills or false requests to leave your residence for a utility-related cause to commit burglary.
In a recent incident on Nov. 10, two males knocked on the door of a house in La Mirada. Refusing to show identification or work orders, the imposters claimed they were from Southern California Edison (SCE) and instructed the residents to vacate the home immediately due to downed power lines affecting their property.
Confused, the residents eventually complied and moved to the backyard. Only after growing suspicious did the residents call 911. The burglars fled the scene before Sheriff's Deputies could arrive. Fortunately, no property was taken.
Residents should always ask for identification when a stranger comes to the door or calls claiming to be a utility worker. SCE utility workers particularly will provide verification, including their department and phone number, when asked.

La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts Wins Three at LA Ovation Awards Including Best Season
San Gabriel~The La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts took home three awards during the 24th Annual LA Ovation Awards ceremony this past weekend on November 3rd.
La Mirada Theatre won the award for Best Season for its 2012-13 season featuring productions of Boeing Boeing, Jekyll & Hyde, Next to Normal, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Spring Awakening. Walmart Neighborhood Market Celebrates Grand Opening at Crossroads Shopping Center

La Mirada~After a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony, the La Mirada High School Jazz Band played for attendees and customers as the new Walmart Neighborhood Market opened for business this past Wednesday morning during the store’s official grand opening at the Crossroads Shopping Center in La Mirada.
The new 35,000 square foot store will provide local customers with a new, convenient option for their grocery shopping needs, including fresh produce and pharmacy services and will host a full grocery department, including organic and natural selections, in addition to a self-serve deli and a bakery.
“The La Mirada Chamber of Commerce is pleased to welcome a Walmart Neighborhood Market to our community,” said Dustin L Dahl, President of the La Mirada Chamber of Commerce and La Mirada resident. “This business will bring an added value to La Mirada and will offer an opportunity for job growth, thereby, strengthening our local economy. The new Walmart Neighborhood Market will hire about 65 and will bring viable tax revenue to our city so we can enhance our public services.”
The store also has a pharmacy that offers a full range of products and services for prescription pick-ups and other health products. The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services.
Pharmacy personnel can answer product and prescription questions and customers can ask about health and wellness solutions.
While other Southern California Walmart Neighborhood Markets have brought business back to vacant storefronts, this is the first newly-constructed Walmart grocery store in Southern California. Other area Walmart Neighborhood Markets include La Palma, Stanton, Anaheim, La Puente, Downey, Bell Gardens, Hawthorne, Torrance, downtown Los Angeles and others.
New La Mirada History Book Claims Number One Spot of New Releases
La Mirada~The first history book published about the history of La Mirada since 1970, compiled by two former childhood residents and a La Mirada native, has recently claimed the number one spot for best sellers of new releases on its publishers website.
Available from Xlibris Publishing, the book, “Reflections from McNally’s Mirror,” at 9 x 6 x 2 inches features over 170 pages of early La Mirada history up until the 1980’s, over 130 personal memoirs and stories sent in from current and former La Mirada residents, and a pictorial section that includes 292 rare pictures and photos.
Glen Cantrell, who along with Raymond Fernandez and Tony Aiello, inspired and led the team of three that brought the book to fruition.
Cantrell, author of The Resume and Untypical, grew up in La Mirada and graduated from La Mirada High School in 1976.

The concept originated from Fernandez, who also grew up in La Mirada and graduated from La Mirada High in 1993.
Aiello, a La Mirada native who still resides in the city, graduated from John Glenn High School in 1981 and is the founder and editor of this website.
Among the many features included in the book, is the entire history of the La Mirada City Council races-from incorporation to today-and includes the winners and all the candidates of every race.
The first and last history book written about La Mirada is the iconic “La Mirada: From Rancho to City” by C.W. Bob Camp published in 1970.
“Reflections from McNally’s Mirror” has been dedicated to the late Jerome Oxman, community activist and founder of Oxman’s Surplus who passed away in February of this year at 97.

Veterans Event Scheduled for November 11th
La Mirada~The City of La Mirada will host a Salute to Veterans event on Monday, Nov. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. The event will honor the many heroic men and women in the armed forces who have served our nation throughout history, with special recognition of La Mirada service members.
The event will feature a patriotic presentation consisting of the posting of the Nation’s colors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9148, a military vehicle display, and special guest speaker Norbie Lara of the Wounded Warrior Project, who proudly served in the U.S. Army for 11 and a half years. Local veterans will also be present to share their stories and service memorabilia.
The event is free and open to the public. Students are encouraged to attend and hear first-hand stories from our local heroes.
