La Mirada~Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9148 will host a Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 25 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Olive Lawn Memorial Park in La Mirada. 

The service will include a Memorial Day address by the La Mirada VFW, patriotic songs, a special tribute to fallen soldiers, and placing of memorial flowers by community organizations, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Ladies' Auxiliary. Seating is limited so feel free to bring lawn chairs.

SCHOOLS

La Mirada~Friday, May 22, All day, Annual Track and Field Day.  Students participate in track and field games, sporting events throughout the entire school day.  Awards and medals are given either at the end of the day or the following week when time permits. 

The Living Faith Church always participates and has a BBQ lunch for all the students and staff.  There will be a DJ who plays music most of the day during the sporting events.

-High School Graduation is scheduled for June 17th, beginning at 3:30 p.m (This is the first year it will be at this earlier time.  It used to be scheduled at 4 p.m.). 

-As of today at this time, there are 87 graduates with more coming.  

-Also, due to budget cuts, El Camino High School will be closed beginning July 1st through August 31st.   Unfortunately, this is the first time the school will be closed for the summer months.

Whittier~ From 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m., on Tuesday, May 26, the Whittier Chamber of Commerce will host its monthly Tasty Tuesday networking lunch at Red Robin in the Whittwood Town Center, 15610 Whittier Blvd.

This monthly event offers attendees the chance to engage in some power networking while enjoying a delicious lunch from this popular gourmet burger restaurant. Attendees may choose from several burgers, salads and beverages, all for the exclusive price of $12. Everyone has to eat lunch somewhere, so why not enjoy business networking and great food at the same time?

Norwalk~The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) is pleased to announce participation in a public crime mapping website .

The service provides an affordable and easy-to-use, web-based service for managing and controlling the sharing of crime data with the public.

 Community members can access their neighborhood crime information for free, empowering them to make informed decisions to help improve the safety of their families, friends, property, and the community at large.

At www.crimereports.com users are able to:

  • Query crimes by address, zip code, city
  • Query either a date range or a 3, 7, 14, or 30 day view of crime information
  • Query various types of crime
  • Sort crime information by crime, date, or distance
  • View crime maps of the entire Sheriff's jurisdiction, a sheriff's station, a contract city, unincorporated area or a reporting district
  • View Sex registrant information.
  • Register to receive email notifications of crime activity for a particular location or area. The notification includes a map of the crimes and a list of each crime, including date, crime, and file number.

All information is available at no cost to the public.

The Sheriff Department's participation in this web site was funded by a grant from the Los Angeles County Information Technology Fund. The selected vendor, Public Engines Inc., was founded in 2006. Public Engines provides web-based Software as a Service (SaaS) products to help government agencies manage and control the sharing of data directly with local communities.

With summer fast approaching, Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center is preparing to open Buccaneer Bay. Beginning May 23, Buccaneer Bay will be open on weekends from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

A season pass helps to maximize your summer at Splash! and makes you eligible for discounted rates to special sessions. Splash! season passes are on sale now and cost $49 for children (ages 3 through 12), $64 for adults, and $49 for senior citizens. A family four pack is available for $219 with the option of adding more family members.

There is plenty to see and experience at Splash! From Sunday evening movies to family camp-out, to water sports and a special evening session on the 3rd of July, Splash! is the perfect summer destination for families. Passes are available at Splash! and at the Resource Center.
