NEWS

Norwalk~For the first time since anyone can recall, the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District has cancelled summer school sessions for Elementary and Middle Schools for 2009.

Summer classes will be offered at La Mirada High School to students currently in high school (grades 9-12) . This EXCLUDES students currently in eighth grade.

In a automated telephone message to residents, about-to-retire Superintendent Ginger Shattuck regretfully made the announcement and said this is the result of recent severe budget cuts.

The school district recently announced many teacher and classified worker layoffs across the district for the upcoming 2009-10 school year, resulting in the elimination of many positions.

This follows the Los Angeles Unified School District's recent announcement that school sessions will be eliminated this upcoming summer.

Parents who have already signed up for summer school will receive notification in the mail.

 SCHOOLS

Teacher Peggy Dougan has been heading the American
Heritage Group for thirteen years.

La Mirada~Although the group is lighter compared to recent years-they say, due to the economy-approximately 40+ studeents and 9 adults from Hutchinson Middle School departed for the east coast this past Friday evening.

There was a big gathering in the school parking lot as anxious parents said their goodbyes and watched the kids board the school district bus for the trip to LAX. Principal Bob Easton was there to help see the group off.

Teacher Peggy Dougan has been organizing the American Heritage program for the past 13 years, and although the participants are slightly down this year, she says, "the kids are very excited."

During the eight-day excursion, which runs from May 29 to June 6, the group will  be staying at five different hotels. Site destinations include Boston, Lexington & Concord, New York, Pennsylvania, & Washington D.C..

The group will be returning to LAX Saturday night at 9:00 p.m.
