La Mirada~ Five outstanding students were honored with monetary scholarship at an awards ceremony hosted by the La Mirada Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, June 02, 2009, for their outstanding participation in the Business, Education, Scholarship Training (B.E.S.T.) internship program at La Mirada High School.  Tanya Galyean, Jonathan Doiron, Natalie Shehav, Daniel Bonnaud and Fernando Velasco competed for points in the program for scholarships of $1000 for the winner and $500 for each of the other apprentices. Tanya, a junior at the High School was awarded the top prize and expressed her appreciation for this opportunity to experience the business world in preparation for her future.

Throughout the school year each student rotated through 4 assignments at selected businesses in the area and worked as apprentices at each for 20 hours per month.  They were expected to learn about that business and to follow the protocol expected by their business supervisors.  Points were awarded depending on the quality of their work, attitude, work ethic and successful completion of the assignments.  In addition, working in teams, the students were challenged to plan, market and carry out successfully projects of varying kinds to compete with the others for points.

B.E.S.T. is designed to challenge young students to find and hone their strengths, to recognize and correct their weaknesses, and to learn to work as a team in a business setting. A representative from the office of County Supervisor Don Knabe, a major Foundation sponsor, said, "The B.E.S.T program provides a unique environment to obtain the hands-on education and experience needed for their future success".

Businesses interested in becoming B.E.S.T. funding sponsors or in providing apprenticeship opportunities may contact project coordinator Derek Wood at
