La Mirada~The La Mirada City Council recognized and congratulated Jeannette Murphy on her 90th birthday at a recent council meeting, and presented her with a certificate to commemorate the occason.

Ms. Murphy was born in Nebraska in 1922, and married Theodore Murphy after meeting him while working at the Health Department in Lincoln in May of 1942.

Theodore served in WWII and afterward, he and Jeanette purchased their first home in East Los Angeles in 1947. They then lived in Whittier in prior to moving to La Mirada 1989.

She currently volunteers some of her time making pillows for the Pediatrics Department at Whittier Presbyterian Hospital, where she also worked in the Accounting Department for eight years at one time.

She also spends time playing cards with her friends and neighbors, and has enjoyed living at La Mirada Landmark for over 23 years.

She joked with Mayor Gabe Garcia as he presented her with the certificate on behalf of the City Council, all part of the city's Birthday Recognition Program.

La Mirada~The Arts Colony of La Mirada will hold their next meeting on Monday November 5th at 6:30p at the La Mirada Resource Center, 13700 La Mirada Blvd.

Artist Rowlan Harrison will demonstrate his skills in the Native American method of coil pottery. Demonstration is free to the art appreciating public.

Get in shape and give back to the community!

La Mirada~Grab your running shoes and register now for the 5th Annual La Mirada 5K Run/Walk Fundraiser to be held on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at beautiful La Mirada Regional Park.

This is the first year for the race at Regional, after being held at La Mirada Creek Park the last four years.

The event is hosted by Breezewood Village Senior Housing and Thomas Safran & Associates.

Funds raised at the event will benefit the La Mirada Community Foundation, a group designed to help improve the quality of life in La Mirada, who will then disperse funds to the non-profit groups involved.

Sponsorship opportunities are also available.

Registration cost is $20.00 and includes race entry fee, goody bag, race bib, and t-shirt.

La Mirada~The Arts Colony of La Mirada is excited to welcome pencil artist Rose Marie Rush, at its next regular monthly meeting, Monday September 10th 2012 at 6:30 p.m.

Ms. Rush will demonstrate pencil art and its techniques, and will showcase some of her work.

The group meets the first Monday of every month except July and August. The meetings are free and open to the public and are held at the La Mirada Resource Center, 13710 La Mirada Blvd.

Whittier~Grab some dinner and help the less fortunate by attending a fundraiser for the Interfaith Food Center at KFC this Tuesday evening.

Interfaith Food Center (IFC) is a non-profit organization located in Whittier that has for 28 years been the primary provider of food services to the neediest residents of Whittier and La Mirada.

Founded in 1983, their mission is to alleviate hunger and food insecurity by providing supplemental food services to the hungry, disadvantaged, disabled and homeless population of the City of Whittier and its adjacent unincorporated area, and the City of La Mirada.

They distribute 3 million pounds of food annually, seeing an average of 260 families each day they are open – this totals over 51,000 visits last year, and assistance with over 500,000 meals.

The Interfaith Food Center/KFC Fundraiser will take place on Tuesday, August 14th between 4-9 p.m. at KFC, 16161 Leffingwell Road in Whittier (Leffingwell & First Ave).

Interfaith Food Center will receive 20% of all Pre-Tax Sales when presented with a flyer to a store salesperson.

IFC is one of the largest food pantries in California, serving more than 1,000 households on a weekly basis from a 5000 square foot warehouse/distribution facility equipped with commercial refrigerators and freezers and a walk in cooler unit to properly handle & store food donations.

Annually, IFC places more than two million pounds of food in the hands of struggling families and individuals. Food is obtained from the Los Angeles Regional Food bank, local markets, churches, community organizations, and individual donors.
